Harper’s Bazaar is a British monthly fashion magazine published by Hearst and the National Magazine Company. The magazine was launched in 1970 under the title Harper’s and Queen and was a society magazine focusing on the lives of socialites and British aristocracy- much like Tatler as we know it today. It is now known as a high-end fashion magazine and competitor to the likes of Elle and Vogue.
Harper’s is known for its trend focused fashion editorials featuring high street to couture items, allowing the magazine to reach a large female audience. It also highly features upcoming social events and arts coverage to fully sell a reader lifestyle.
The Harper’s Bazaar reader is a strong female who ties in with the tagline ‘thinking fashion” with a good job, living in a city. She not only likes to read about fashion but also wants it immediately and has the means to make this happen for herself. Because of this, Harper’s Bazaar features many shopping pages alongside its high end fashion editorials, to allow the reader to get her ‘quick fix’ as well as look for the higher end designer pieces. She has a full, assured life with many friends, all as intellectual as she is and with whom she enjoys going to social events, parties and gallery openings with.
Since February 2010 Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou has been fashion director, founder of high-end lifestyle bible 10 magazine, bringing the magazine more respect from the fashion world and allowing their ABC figures to increase 1.1% annually, whilst British Vogue saw a decline of 4.5%.
Harper’s Bazaar has a monthly circulation of 110,638 with a readership of 183,000 and prints under the Harper’s Bazaar title with 33 editions throughout the world.
